In response to the ongoing COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic: ON-CAMPUS LEARNING AT ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL IS SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY. Due to the evolving nature of this situation, we will be informing families when the campus will be able to reopen.
Overview of Distance Learning Plan
The presentation below is a recording from the Parent Information Meeting on March 25, 2020, of St. Michael School's Distance Learning Plan. Also included below is the PowerPoint used in the presentation.
Parent Info Meeting - Distance Learning Plan (PowerPoint)
When does the school anticipate to reopen? At this time, the school is officially closed until April 30th in alignment with recent government mandates for "stay at home" policies to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. However, it is very probable that the campus will remain closed through the rest of the school year. Our teachers are prepared to continue implementing our distance learning plan should the school campus remain closed beyond April.
My child does not have his/her Chromebook, textbooks, or other necessary materials s/he may need during the closure. Am I able to pick that up at the school? Yes, please send an email to Mrs. Cubi or leave a message at 808-637-7772, and she will coordinate the pick-up with you.
Can we use our own devices for distance learning? Yes. Although you may be able to access our virtual platforms through any internet-capable device, it is recommended that your child (Grades 2-8) uses a desktop or laptop computer to connect to the platforms and complete assignments. Tablets and iPads may also function well. Smart phones are the least recommended except for video conferencing.
What if our family does not have a reliable access to the internet at home? You may be eligible to receive free internet services through Spectrum and HawaiianTel. For Spectrum: Spectrum is offering free broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription at any service level up to 100 Mbps 200 Mbps/10 Mbps.
To enroll, call 1-844-488-8395 and all customers will be routed to local call centers.
Customer must identify as a household whose students require remote education at the service address.
Must be an existing non-internet customer.
Household may not have subscribed to internet services within the past 30 days.
No prepayment, credit card required.
Free professional, free self install and free Wi-Fi activation.
No data caps or hidden fees.
Will we receive a refund if we ordered lunch for the week of March 23-30? Families who ordered lunch for the remainder of the month of March will receive a credit for lunch orders when we reopen.
Will tuition be waived because we are no longer on campus? Because the great majority of your tuition goes toward employment costs, the full tuition amount is still due. The school campus is closed, but the school is now operating remotely. Our teachers are still putting in the same amount of time (possibly more) in ensuring that your child is still receiving a quality Catholic education even from home, and administration is still working exceptionally hard to help everyone in this transition to distance learning. However, if your family is experiencing a financial hardship due to the current situation, please contact us to let us know what options might be available.
Is the schedule the same as the regular school schedule? No, the schedule has been altered in order to better meet the needs of a new and dynamic learning environment taking place at home. All students in Preschool-Grade 8 will have the same snack time (9:45am-10:15am) and lunch time (11:45am-12:45pm), and classes will be everyday (Monday-Friday) from 8am for Grades K-8 and 9am for Preschool and end at 3pm for everyone. Outside of this, daily time periods for each class and subject will be different; please contact your child's teacher for their respective schedule.
Will the teachers be only giving study materials and assignments virtually, or will they also be giving instruction? Teachers will be using a combination of direct and indirect instrution. Direct instruction, or live instruction, will take place through one of the video streaming platforms (Google Meet or Zoom) in which students and classmates will have the ability to interact with each other in real-time. Indirect instruction includes the assignments or projects teachers give such as work to be completed through offline activities or online platforms.
Will the school year be extended as a result of the closure? Throughout the duration of the closure, students should be able to stay on par with their scheduled workload as if the school was still open. Because of this, we also intend to keep the existing schedule as is and do not expect any extension into the summer.
What school events or activities have been canceled or postponed?
Spring Fundraiser (Regal Foods) - POSTPONED until May, assuming school reopens
Spring Concert - POSTPONED until May, assuming school reopens
Terra Nova Standardized Testing - CANCELED
May Day - CANCELED
Basketball Practices/Games - CANCELED
All other on-campus activities that were scheduled for April have also been canceled.
Will the closure impact receiving the sacraments, graduation, or summer programs? At this time, it is too early to know if any of these events will be impacted. We should have a better understanding toward the middle or end of April of the status of these programs.
Will we receive a refund if we ordered lunch for the week of March 23-30? Families who ordered lunch for the remainder of the month of March will receive a credit for lunch orders when we reopen.
Will the office be open during the closure? Mrs. Cubi will be responding to various requests on a regular basis. However, we discourage anyone from coming to the office unless absolutely necessary. Please call or email us if you need assistance with anything.
